San Jose Water Company - A1201003 - Proceeding - 44% Rate Increase

How long has the SJWC 44% Rate Increase been going on?

The Rate increase proceeding has been "going" 672 days since January 3, 2012.

The typical case takes less than 18 months (roughly 540 days) from filing to ruling, as of today (11/08/2013) 672 days, 132 days longer than normal per CPUC average.

What reasons are A1201003, San Jose Water Company General Rate Increase is taking so long to reach a ruling?

  • The DRA Report showing a 10% increase over 3 years is appropriate based on independent analysis, rather than the 44% requested by the San Jose Water Company.
  • The very high level of ratepayer/customer resistance and complaints about the 44% water rate increase.
  • The difficulty for San Jose Water Company may be having justifying the magnitude of the increase, especially in the context of dedicated management specifically tasked to regulatory affairs (getting more money from us). P. Jensen SVP - $620,000 annual salary doesn't include stock, bonus, car, expenses, Wes Owens, Mgr. Regulatory Affairs, etc. How much do we pay annually for "Regulatory Affairs"? Millions? It's confidential unless required by SEC (Federal Security and Exchange Commission)........... So we'll never know for sure!

San Jose Water Company is wholly owned by SJW Corp. a public traded company on the NYC and SJWC expenses are hidden within the overall corporate financials publically reported and required by Federal law, soley for the protection of the shareholders.
  • The other possible reason is to "drag the proceeding out to the point the ratepayers loss interest" and the ruling can quietly be issued. Once released and is not challenged our rates will go up!
